Hello Direk Bee, it’s a pleasure to have you with us for this interview. Congratulations on your award at last season of the “Indie World Film Festival”.
Q: Your new movie is “Mata-Mata”; in a few words, what is it about?
A: Mata-Mata is a film about Brien, who has an schizophrenia. One time he forgot to drink his medication which causes him to panic and begin to see a masked man like he was being chased.
Q: When did you plan to do this film?
A: Last year but this was shoot last week of March this year.
Q: What got you into filmmaking in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?
A: I have a strong passion in story telling. I also love listening people’s stories or watch movies that really caught my interest. I started as writer then hone further my craft and became a director. I was able to attend some workshops but most of the time, I self-taught like watching tutorial or tips videos on YouTube or search the web for any additional information.
Q: What can you tell us about your film work prior to this film?
A: My previous film under GoGlow Production was “ISOLASYON”, a family drama short film, which is also an awardee in the previous season on your festival. Generally, my previous films are more on touching the hearts of the viewers in an artistic and creative way that I can as possible. But right now, I’m challenging myself to try different genres.
Q: Can you explain or tell us some of the important elements of this film that makes it interesting?
A: I believe one of the things that make this film stand out is how the beautiful places of Cebu City, Philippines was being showcase. Aside from that, it has a compelling story that talks about being optimistic despite having mental illness. That sometimes our fear is limiting our mind to conquer but if you’ll be able to surpass it you’ll never know that you will become somebody. I also edited the film through technical manipulation in visuals and audios.
Q: How big was your team and what were the cameras that you used?
A: I have a small but great team with me that help me althrough out the film process namely, Dan Lopez (lead actor and production manager), Dan Mark Lopez (Masked Man), Cherry Camion (Nurse), Mrs. Eleanor Lopez and Family (Executive Producer), Pares-Pares (Sponsor) and your’s trully for the Directing, Screenplay, Cinematography and Editing.
Q: Directors (and indeed actors) who inspire you and what are your favourite movies?
A: I’m inspired with my dreams. One of which is filmmaking. There like the fuel of my life. It’s what keeps me going when every is sad and blue, difficult and rough, exhausting and shallow. That’s why receiving such award from your festival is a happiness that lighten up my dream and ignites to strive for more. Lately I don’t have a specific movie favorites but I always love Guillermo Del Torro’s “Pans Labyrinth”. It’s enticing from it’s visual upto it’s story. I love how we were brought to drama and twist with the mix of fantasy that will totally made you fall in love with the movie. Although, my all time favorite film is “Titanic”. I just love it’s execution and how flawless and intense the film is.
Q: Where can people see your work?
A: As of the moment, we don’t have available public streaming or screening of our films since they’re still in competition. Some festivals forfeit or disqualify the film if it was already shown to the public. But soon you might be able to see it on my page, just follow my page @direkbeeofficial
Q: What are your future projects?
A: As of the moment we are in the development stage of the possible film that we’re going to shoot before the year ends. It’s another interesting film from the team so watch out for it.
